RE: 2006 FLST Tach
I responded to your post in the harleyzone.
It looks like HD hasn't improved their instruction sheets for Tach installation. I had the same problem with the instructions for a 2003 FXD. I tossed the instruction in the trash and studied the wiring diagrams for a DYNA model that came stock with a Tach, and used that to wire mine. Since then, I have run into numerous people having the same problem and they have been able to get their wiring done using my simplified instructions. I am not sure if the wiring is the same on the Softail models, but here is what I did.
Behind the headlight, there is a 12 place connector. Cavity # 7 of that connector has a pink wire in one side of it and a plastic plug on the other side. (Models without tach have the plastic plug). Remove the plastic plug and insert the pink tach wire in that cavity.
The black wire from the tach gets spliced to the black wire in cavity #12 of the same connector. (this is a ground.)
The orange wire from the tach gets spliced to the black wire in cavity # 6 of the same connector.(Indicator lights power lead.)
Like I said, the softail models might not be identical and you may need to study the wiring diagrams for a softail model that has a tach from the factory.
