I purchased a used Harley tach for my SuperG and was wondering if I hooked it up correctly. Of course I have no idea if the tach is truly good, but it seems to be reading about half the rpm it should be. Not wanting to dig into the ignition, I spliced into the coil harness and hooked up to what i believe is the signal wire for the coil. Yes, I have the service manual, but I really wanted to keep the wiring accessible. Is there an adjustment on the tach I can make to get the signal correct? Or am I just screwed? Thanks for the help!
Did you get the instruction sheet with the tach? If so, my advise would be to not follow the instructions for installing it! The installation instructions they provide are pertty worthless. Here is what I did on my '03 FXD (and it worked on a friends '01 FXD too).
The pink tach wire gets plugged into cavity # 7 of the 12 place connector [20B]. The connector is located behind the headlight and there should be a plastic plug in the cavity that the pink wire goes to. Remove the plastic plug and put the pink wire from the tach in there.
The black tach wire gets spliced to the black wire in cavity # 12 of the same connector.
The orange wire gets spliced to the black wire in cavity # 6 of the same connector.
I figured this out by studying the wiring diagrams for models that come stock with a tach.
I don't know if the 2005 has the same wiring, but if you have the service manual, you can study the wiring diagram for any of the Dyna's that have a tach as stock equipment. That should tell you which wires to splice into.
Oh yeah...and just so everyone knows, the signal wire on my tach (Harley accessory) was yellow and it goes to the pink signal wire like rh said. I tapped into the gas gauge in front of the tank because it was an easy power and ground. Works great, thus far!
Hmm....i bought it off ebay, so part numbers werent in the equation. I'm betting though that if you get a genuine Harley accessory tach, it will work. Just follow the above guidance and you will be ok, I think. Hell, if it worked for me, it will work for anyone I suppose!!
