This will definitely make me sound like an ironhead(haha), but what are the recommended oils for my 83 xlx? motor oil? primary oil? I know brake fluid is dot5, so I'm just looking to find out what i should use for engine and trans/primary. thanks!

Any good 20w-50 will work in either holes. I use Pennz 20w-50 in my motor. However, I use any brand of .89 cent non-detergent 30W in the primary.

 

In -83 you can use ATF or Sportster trans fluid, it works better than motoroil

 

Sportrans is nothing more than about a straight 30w oil.

ATF in a Sporty tranny? Seems way too thin to me.

 

I use 20w-50 in the motor.

I use 50wt in the summer, 20w50 in the winter, and Sportrans fluid in the primary (I think it's synthetic).

 

Mobil 1 20-50 in the motor and Sport Trans in the trans.
