Default Engine Oil Change FYI

FWIW....looks like they have updated the Online Owners Manual. My hard copy OM says Initial Fill after oil change 4.5 quarts. The Online OM's for registered 'Owners' 2017 Touring Model Owners Manual section for Engine Oil Change says Initial Fill 4.0 qts. I could have sworn it stated 4.5 before. I bought my bike at the end of August so one of the first batch..guessing people who just bought bikes will see 4.0 in their OM's now. when I did my first oil change I recall 4.25 was the sweet spot at about 3/4 FULL Hot, but I swapped out the OEM oil cooler with the fan assisted one at the time, so next OC I'll know more exact spec for me anyway.

yup..4.5 to start with made HD change their minds..capacity spec is 5.2 so there's a fair amount left in there after drain

Put in 4.5 quarts.

If it's too much it'll just be routed to the intake

I'M KIDDING MJ!

agreed....but just dump some of that 4.5 directly on the cam cover and surrounding area and skip the middle man

You are correct, 4.5 quarts is too much for an oil change, along with a new filter. My bike is a RGS with the stock oil cooler. It took me about 4.25 quarts to get the level at 6 dots once the bike cooled down. I had let it drain upright overnight on a hot engine, so I know it was about as drained as it could get.

I start with 4 quarts of motor oil and add more oil from there until I get 1/2-3/4 up on the stick. Air filter is staying dry, everything is stock.

I go with exactly 4 quarts and it gets me up to 1/2 way on the "check hot" range. That's supposed to be the sweet spot for reducing the oil that comes out of the breather tubes.
