I know the ecm update raises the idle speed. After all the advertising about the M8 engine having a lower idle speed than the TC's, wonder why they are raising it? Does the update do anything else?

All it did was raise idle speed a bit. Going to put the bike to a good test starting May 26th. Wife and I will put between 3,600-4,800 miles on two up and loaded. It will get up to some high altitudes and some lower ones day, night ,wet ,dry , cool and hot . I only have 2000 miles on this one purchased it just as winter rolled in here. And I had been riding the sidecar a lot so it sat some this spring.

Are the last digits of the VIN a true progressive number regardless of model? Mine is 623623 and was built 10/3/16.

I read somewhere that "supposedly" there was an Early Batch of Bad Engine Oil Pumps But, I have no actually spoken with my Dealer to verify this info.
I purchased my 2017 Road Glide Special in March & have about 500 miles on it so far, no Engine Oil Light has come on yet... Nothing abnormal that I can tell so far except, I do sometimes notice some kind of a noise at low speed But with all the echo that can go on from the Fairing and on back, I have Not been able to Isolate where the noise is coming from.

The last 8 of my VIN are: HB649429 - No Engine problems at this time.
Thank You
It's hard to say what's true but manufacturing trash in some early pumps seems to be pretty popular on the forums. As far as trusting what your local dealer says.... well that's hit or miss. When you read some of the outright stupid things dealers have told customers on this forum alone it doesn't build much confidence. Couple that with the fact the most service writers working at dealerships couldn't find their *** with both hands.
I bought my bike the first week in October 16 so it's an early build. I've got just under 8k miles and no apparent problem with the oil pump or pressure so far. I would think what ever issue Harley had they likely wrapped their hands around it long before your bike came off the line.
Even with an early bike unless Harley issues a recall (hell will freeze over first) or a Technical Bulliten there's nothing to do other than ride my bike. In the absence of a documented serial number group of bikes from Harley anything else is just noise on the internet.

Got word from the dealer, they have replaced the oil pump. As soon as they drop it off, I will test it to see if it smokes or if there is any more oil leaking from the rear cylinder/rocker cover. If it smokes when it starts, it goes right back to the dealer.

Thank you

Just rode my 17 Road King home yesterday and I love it. Have the same issue as riderboy1961. The bike sounds horrible when starting from first gear and at low speeds. It is like a loud lifter noise of a car with no oil. Any others experience this?
