2017 M8 Stage 4 Engine Disaster
2017 Road Glide Special. Self installed the Screaming Eagle stage 4 kit about 5 months ago. TTS 200 cam, TTS tuner, D&D 2into1. At time of install the bike had around 5000 miles, Bike now has 7800. When I did the work I used the latest iteration oil pump. I think the part number ended in 178. Also, I changed the piston key gaskets and torqued the screws to 35 inch pounds.
After install, bike ran incredible. Power torque simply amazing! During the last Friday of bike week in Daytona, I noticed what I would have described as a knock. At first I figured one of the Screaming Eagle lifters was going bad, but it didn’t quite seem like a lifter noise. Sounded more like piston slap, but it got worse after it warmed up. I never observed a loss of power and at no time have I had a oil pressure light or noticed what I would call excessive heat from the engine. Did a compression check, leak down and a lot of probing with a stethoscope. To make a long story short, I elected to tear it down this evening. I have attached some pics of what I found. Needless to say I am not a happy camper and I’d like to get my hands on someone in charge at Harley Davidson right about now.
Im still trying to sort this out and my course of action at this point. I’m looking for recommendations as to how to proceed. Maybe I should just call the junk man and have him tote this big pile of parts off to the scrap yard. Seriously, though, I’ve got to fix this mess and hopefully do it in a manner that will not allow it to occur again, although I’m not sure if that’s possible at this point. Maybe I should just let it be until someone figures this sumping thing out. That might be a while though. Possibly find a good attorney...sounds like a losing proposition. Anyway folks, any constructive input/recommendations would be appreciated. This is the rear piston. Scoring is basically right above the piston jets. Front piston looks virtually the same.
Rods at crank:flywheel.
Associated scoring of cylinder!

If it was me. I would have had the dealer pull it apart. The kit comes with 1byear warranty but now that you took it apart. There is no way to prove that it was assembled correctly. Your cheapest bet at this point is to talk to fuel motor most likely and get one of their kits. If I was willing to bet, Harley is going to tell you to **** off.

I did read the post. But how do you know their was no warranty? Because of this forum? Not trying to be rude but you might be amazed on how things work out. Seen a guy get his motor repaired under warranty. He had PV, full exhaust and woods cam. Not saying your situation would have been the same, I personally would have made the call to the dealer before I took it apart.
I hope you get it all worked out though. My next call like I said would be to FM.

Wow, that sucks. Looks like a bad match between piston and cylinder, or more likely an out of round bore. Get a hold of a cylinder bore gauge and measure the entire bore in 60 deg segments. If it's really out of round MOCO may step and give you a new kit.
The rod bearings really show some heat. Good luck.
