I broke my M8 in per the manual and it doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes and I ride hard, so there's that.

You’re also better off breaking it in in cooler weather.

My son did it the old fashion way and rode it like he stole it.
Many years ago I think people were scared to change down thinking it would hurt the engine with higher revs but then ended up labouring it.

I followed the manual pretty close when braking mine in, did a little more up and down on throttle first 100 miles, getting compression braking in. Didn't use oil.

After I built the motor I did several heat cycles each getting longer. Then rode it 50 miles mainly going from 2K rpm to 3500 for first 10 mile, then 2K to 4000 rpm for 20 miles then 20 miles of 2K to 4500~5000 rpm. The whole time up and down on rpm. After that rode it like I normally ride. Uses no oil.

One thing I would recommend, is pay attention to the bike, the tach, when you riding, leave your girl at home, leave the jams out of your ears, and pay attention to the bike going down the road. Real easy to get distracted having a convo with the ole lady, or jamming out to the tunes, and look down seeing you doing 4500 in 3rd or lugging at 1000 in 5th.
this is exactly how I always broke my bikes in over the years!

This is why every mile past zero on a new bike becomes a negotiating subject!
