As long as whatever you use has the proper friction modifiers and additives for motorcycles, yes.

As with all oil threads since oil was invented, this thread included, you'll see "I use Product A and my lifters dont rattle and I'm lasting longer in bed!", or "I use Product B and my bike runs cooler and I'm getting fewer colds!", "I use Product C because its not made in a country I don't like"

Again, no blown up engines due to using this oil or that.

So.... yes.

I've used HD Formula + for the last couple decades, probably since around the time it came out..it's proven..I tried the HD 80W140 in my 2020 RGS and it too worked just fine. When my 24 RG had its engine replaced last year the new 15W50 / 50 replacement to original SYN 3 came out and I asked the master tech working on my bike if that might be worth switching to..he said his only real strong recommendation was to just continue using Formula + in the Primary, based on his long time extensive experience he's seen no reason to not trust it. So that's what I have continued to use .. I always change my Primary around 5000 miles like many, because it gets filthy pretty fast..I did the same with the 80W140 but at $20+ a bottle it just seemed unnecessarily wasteful

I asked Jamie at Fuelmoto this very question a year or so ago and he recommended Belray Primary chain case oil, I've run it ever since

I have switched to HD's 80-140 gear oil for the primary. This is what they recommend now days. I think it performs better that an 20 -50 oil.

well that is not a true statement..most Owners Manuals state

8. Add lubricant.
a. Pour specified amount of FORMULA+ TRANSMISSION AND PRIMARY CHAINCASE LUBRICANT or SCREAMIN' EAGLE SYN3 FULL SYNTHETIC MOTORCYCLE LUBRICANT 20W50 through clutch inspection cover opening. Refer to Table 1.

and here's what "they" say about their HD 80W140 .. which isn't even mentioned in any of their Owners Manuals that I am aware of, rather just an alternative for certain specific use applications, as opposed to what they consider normal operating conditions (think of it as the exception not the rule) as for most it's simply not necessary

Exclusively engineered for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, this Heavy Gear Oil is intended for use in extreme temperature environments (desert heat or cold weather), frequent two-up riding and heavy load riding applications.

My Dealer recommended it to me also, when I told him Red Line Primary oil made the clutch squeak after my Stage III uprate build. I understand the manual doesn't recommend it. It wasn't available when my bike was built, nor are there recommendations for the power uprate stages.

Otherwise I wouldn't be here asking if it was just about reading the manual for a stock bike.

The last new bike I saw sat on the dealer floor had a label stating all three holes had the same oil in.

When SYN 3 came out years ago, they said that. Fast fwd and they change that to Formula + in transmission and primary on most models. Motor oil was listed as second choice.

However it was not on all models. In previous threads, someone had a CVO that said SYN in 3 holes and another user had the same model not in the CVO that listed Formula + and SYN 3 as second choice. .

I can only guess they had more warranty issues in certain bikes with motor oil in the transmission and primary.

Just guessing. Unless someone pushes a bike to the maximum, it probably doesn't matter.
