I've taken 17 towards Nags Head from DC and the traffic lights and speed limits thru Yorktown and Neewport News are killers, not to mention the police presense in these burgs. I don't know how the roads are south of Newport News but I wouldn't take this route unless I had plenty of time. If you do have the time, enjoy the ride. I'm sure it could be wonderful with lots of sights and Mom&Pop shops on the way.

I used to live in VA and have ridden 460 several times. I have also ridden 17 down to Myrtle Beach. 17 is a good ride. probably about 6 hrs from VA to Myrtle. 460 is pretty good, butIf you want a road with a few twisties and scenery take rt 10 from 295 in Hopewell to Smithfield.

I've done 17S from Va Bch area all the way down to Charleston. As mention by others previously, there are a few small 'burgs along the way, but I enjoy the route. Especially if you aren't pressed for time.
