A weird one involving an oil change
Hi, I'm a new member and i own a 2014 V-Rod muscle. Just changing the oil and I've found a small 6mm bolt in the oil. Does anyone have any idea where this may have come from. The bike has only done 1500 miles.

Hello old chap from across the County border! To be honest I have my doubts about it being a metric screw, as most stuff on Harleys is American - in other words inch sizes. So do check the thread more precisely! If a screw came out of the gearbox with the oil then check a parts website to see if you can identify a likely candidate. First task is to confirm it has actually come from within, next thing is to decide what to do next. Dismantling to replace an internal screw is a time consuming and expensive thing to do, so make sure it really came from inside the gearbox, then make sure again, repeat, etc. Start by checking the exterior, to see if it actually comes from somewhere close by and fell into the oil by chance.

My bet is it was on the outside of the engine or was already in the drain pan. If there aren't any marks or mauling on the bolt, it didn't come out of the sump of a unit construction bike (which is what the V-Rod is). That thing would have made a hellofa racket.

I'd take the bolt to the dealer and ask the service dept. if it looks like something that may have come off inside the engine.

take it to the dealer an see if they have the screw that holds the oil pick up in place an compare it. You can also consider lowering the oil pan an taking a look up at what's there an what's not. You can also check with Fitzgerald Motorsports an email or message them on facebook an see if they know of a bolt like that that could have dropped into the pan.

In the parts book of your bike, there is a chapter with a list of all fasteners. Measure your bolt and check if you find that particular type of bolt in the list. It will give you a clear indication if this bolt is foreign to your bike or not. If it's in the list you will know exactly where to look at.

Here is a link to the 2014 V-Rod parts list.
Look in the hardware list for the bolt sizes.
