New owner oil questions
Hey all,
I'm the proud owner of a 2011 deluxe with 3800 original miles on the clock. The bike looks to have had excellent care. I'm going to change the engine oil and filter to be safe. I see that the service interval chart specifies that the chaincase and transmission lube be changed at 1000 miles. What do you all think the chances are that this was done? Do dealers/owners normally do this or skip it? In your opinion should I change both anyway? As a point of reference I normally do all of my own wrenching. Any other issues I should consider as a first time Harley owner?
Thanks, Chris-

For the peace of mind, and have a base for the future, change it out. You're not talking big bucks.

Yep, start fresh. It'll only cost you a couple more quarts of lube and a few more minutes of time.

Since you are doing it yourself, what's two quarts of Formual +. Neather the transmission and primary have a filter.
Do all three ever 5-8k. Don't worry about time.
That primary is dirtier then the engine and the clunky transmission never seems to stop generating chips on the magnet.

Just a side note here, I've heard HD has just come out with a new primary and transmission "gear"oil. And yes it says gear oil on the bottle. I think it just came out yesterday.

Following up on Norty Flatz's suggestion...
Use heavy duty foil if you can find it. I make mine by folding up some foil so I'm working with a piece that has some "body" to it.
ALSO...take a REAL good look at the tires on your newly acquired low-mile 2011 bike. All the way around...you're not checking tread depth, you're looking for ROT.
7-8 yr old tires even with good tread might not be a good bet given that your side of the wager is your LIFE, vs. a few more bucks to put a safe ride on the road. If you're not worried about yourself...think about the other folks you might be riding with.
A long time ago, a Brother had a tire blowout. He went down, along with the 2 other Brothers riding with him. Killed all three.
GBNF.
