Default oil plug differences

hey guys, i was reading through these forums to get myself ready to do my first oil change on my softail when i saw those pictures showing what the oil drain plug was supposed to look like. i was pretty sure i had located the plug on my motorcycle, but it looked different that the ones posted here so i took pictures to see what you guys think.

the first is an above view of the plug (it looks very similar to the picture in the DIY forums)

and the second is a picture from underneath (of what i assumed is) the oil drain plug.

but mine looks like it requires a flathead screwdriver to remove. so my question is, this isn't the original drain plug? it was like this when i bought the bike (i hope) because i never changed it. and if it's not, should i go and buy a new plug to replace this one?

p.s. sorry if the pictures are low quality, i had to take them with my camera phone. although i do think it did a pretty good job. ^^

What year bike?

My wife's Heritage has a hex plug that requires a 5/8" socket and has an allen recess in the middle of it.

Regards,

Bill

That is not the correct plug for your drain....

Makes me think that someone (Prior owner) lost it....

But lost it where?????

In the garage or on the road...... While doing Mach 2.....

Talk to the previous owner and ask.....

What's the worst you are going to hear.... That was there when I got the bike?

With that being said... You need to get the CORRECT DRAIN PLUG and o-ring....

Install after you have drained oil and see if the plug holds (Threads could be stripped ou (Hence the different type plug)....

BTW, Thanks for thinking of me KB!!!!!

You know that is just plain wrong......

I could be a real azz and delete this.....

But I am above that.....

Instead, I will have pity on your Brownies......

Lose as they may... This is the closest they will ever get to a Lombardi trophy (200 miles)....

LOL.....
