Default Tranny clunk after switching to Amsoil 10w-40

I put Amsoil in all 3 holes and now it clunks when shifting into 1st gear. I put Amsoil 10w-40 in the primary and 20w-50 in the motor and severe 75w-90 in the trans. It was fine before the switch and this puzzles me , it acts as if the clutch needs adjustment ? I think I may go back to the HD fluid in the primary and see if that cures it ?The bike is an 06 Night Train , any suggestions?

use Amsoil 20w50 in primary
I use Amsoil 20w50 in primary and engine, Red Line Heavy in trans.
No problems.

I think if you do a search though the section in which you made your post you will find tons of useful info on who uses what fluids in the different holes. Then you can make your decision on which best suits you.

If you are only getting the clunk when you shift into first gear, then that is a deal common to HD's. A wrench at the Harley shop said if you hold the clutch in for 5 to 10 seconds before shifting, it will help. I do that and sometimes it does and sometimes not so much. I'm just surprised it didn't clunk before the change.

The clunk is your chain tensioner needing adjusting.

Amsoil recommends their motorcycle 20W50 in all three holes. 10W40 is to light for the primary and the severe duty 75W90 is way to heavy for the trans. The severe duty is designed for trucks. If you insist on using a gear lube use the Amsoil 75W90 or Mobile 1 75W90, not severe duty.

FYI; the oil viscosity at 200 degrees is higher with Amsoil 20W50 with a lower shear stress than any 75W90 gear lube. Look it up for yourself and compare.

I have 45,000 miles on my 04 Ultra and 80,000 miles on my Yamaha Venture and have used Amsoil in all three holes with excellent results and no problems. Just replaced my chain tensioner on my Ultra and the wear was half that of regular oil.

My $.02 worth.

I would try the 20w50 in the primary and see what happens. The 75w90 is fine for the trans.

I would have agreed until I looked at the spec's on Redline Shockproof Heavy. Go to the redline website and check it out. Call them and speak to the tech there and you will be impressed. I too was a big 20w50 engine oil in the trans fan until looking at redline. I am switching at my next change because I have talked to several people who use it and swear by it. It rates as a 75w90 and has a protection factor of 75w250. It has a GL5 rating and the 20w50 motor oil is only a GL4. Everybody says it quiets & smooths out the trans and runs very cool. I'm sold!

The specs you describe are the companies own specs. Look at the ASTM oil test. Red Line failed to make the first ASTM test cut, and is not even listed on the latest test results. Worse than Syn 3. Lot of "hype". Their relation to their standard gear lube lubricating like a 250 viscosity gear lube is bull. 250 viscosity gear oil won't even pour below 32 degrees, it's like tar, how can it lubricate?

Like Harley, Red Line doesn't make a lot of their oils, and some are not even pure synthetic, and in some cases they recommend they be mixed with other viscosity oils to achieve a desired result.

Get the facts read the ASTM test results for yourself. Compare viscosities and shear stress of each oil at the 200 degree test. The motorcycle Mobil 1 and Amsoil 20W50 have a higher viscosity index and less shear stress than any other oil on the market.

The tranny should have a Gear lube viscosity oil in it. I prefer 75w90 severe gear. You can run the 85w140 in it , but it may be a bit thick in the winter. Your primary chain tension should be checked also. The reason that Amsoil says that you can run their 20w50 in all 3 holes is strictly for convenience. Yes it will work...no I do not recommend it.

Does anyone know what API GL rating Harley Davidson recommends in thier trannies? The service manual only recommends HD product...huh imagine that!
