Oil Changes
Talked to Svc Manager about changing oil to other than HD. Thought I insulted him. He says that he will use whatever I bring him, however he claims that if there is a subsequent problem HD MAY not stand buy the warranty. Is this a crock of s...?

They would have to provide proof of the damage (if any) that was done was a direct cause of the oil used (assuming you didn't have peanut oil in the engine). Most of the oils on the marked today either meet or exceed the manufacturers specs, so they would have a real difficult (or impossible) time denying a repair based on this, besides, I seriously doubt they analize the oil in an engine when a repair comes in to begin with.
Ask him for that in writing and see if you could get it. I don't think there is any way you would get that in writing

I suggest Mobil 1 V Twin oil and If YOU supply the oil, make sure they reduce the bill accordingly for the oil change. Bet you have to call them on this fact or they will charge you for the oil even thou you bring your own.
Notice he said..."MAY NOT" and not 'WILL NOT"
It's all about his profit and the bottom line here.
aGREE WITH THE FORMER POST. GOTO www.amsoil.com and read the white paper. se syn3 ranks 6 out of 15 with amsoil and mobil1 both ahead of hd. I use amsoil myself and have used syn3 and mobil1. With mobil1 and syn3 i used a half quart every 3,000 miles. With amsoil i use none in 5,000 miles. any more questions??
Thanks guys! Only problem now is that I can't find Mobil 1 anywhere in this area..(jacksonville,NC). will expand my search area.

Everything posted in this thread is correct, but I here's the way I looked at it - Why open a can of worms? Other oils might be better than HD oil, but that doesn't mean that HD oil is bad. I know guys who've got 100,000 miles on HDs using HD oil and never had a problem. Sure, it's against the law for them to void your warranty if you use other oil, but exactly how much do you stand to gain by fighting that fight? I'm sticking with HD oil as long as the bike is under warranty.

This is a good point but HD doesn't make a trans oil that states that it's a gear oil. I use syn3 in engine and primary and feel that probably all of the 20w50 synthetics are fine there. But if I have learned 1 thing from this forum (thanks TC) and from all the people I have talked to who have no financial gain involved is that manual transmissions of ALL types need gear oil PERIOD! I have asked engineers from Borg Warner, Blackstone Labs, GM Powertrain, Ford, ZF and Daimler Chrysler and ALL said......why would you want to put motor oil in a transmission? Have you lost your mind? I'm sold on the redline shockproof heavy. JMHO
