#32
I getting ready to turn my bike over to my local dealership for a 5000 mile service, and was want to change my engine oil to synthetic oil. I am thinking of keeping the tranny, and the primary with there basic oils, but the engine synthetic oil. I here alot of arguments of brands but I like to know a honest opinon which is better The Amsoil oil or Harley's Synthetic oil. I know they may offer me their brand.
We are off to the races.

I get a kick out the reaction I sometimes get when I tell folks that I buy my motor oil at Wal-Mart.....

There's a rating on each oil can,If the rating is the same then the oils perform virtually the same.
I personally prefer synthetic to dino, but type?? What ever is on sale.
Now logic tells me one is prolly a bit better than the other but if it was significant it would go for a higher rating and increase sales.
The problem is which one?? All the testing says they are the same!!
Or if you believe what Amsoil or company X says they are the best?? Then prove it and get a higher rating.
Same price, same rating, same oil!!

Some of the things I've learned after working in the field of vehicle maintenance for over 50 years. Large fleets and repair shops don't use a particular oil brand because its the best, they use it because they got the best deal on it . While oil may be oil, the additive packages vary greatly, when switching oil brands oil consumption may temporarily increase on average as the new additives wash out the old. Besides that, oil is all about marketing to make you pick theirs. Pick a brand and stick with it, use the correct grade for your application and follow manufactures maintenance guidelines. Motorcycle specific engine oils are all about Friction modifiers to work with the clutches in those bikes that share. In our Big Twins there is no need for Motorcycle specific.
