Why not use 10W40 or 20W50 in primary? Which non H-D oil would you use?

ORIGINAL: Littleshack

Mobil 1 20w50 engine, Redline Heavy Gear in Trans, and Formula + in Primary. Sometimes RevTech Prime

I was told NOT to use 10w40 or 20w50 inPrimary (NEVER).

Also the old fashion Primary oil (harley) Was eating threw something in thier so they Stopped making the stuff.

Which Mobil 1 oil leads in this poll, 20W50 V-Twin, 10W40 Racing, or what? This is the one poll of the three with the least clarity.

If I recall correctly I'm currently running Rotella 10W-40.

but IMHO any decent 10W-40, dino or syn, is fine.

which choice is HD Formula+? I don't see it listed

I just changed my primary and transmission to Formula+ and it still shifts the same/neutral's still easy to find ... 4th whines a little, same as before -- didn't notice any change in the transmission at all

I did notice an immediate difference with the clutch ... it's more touchy and the friction band is smaller, which I'm not happy about ... it will be some other oil this fall when I put it away

does anyone know what Formula+ actually is? ... is it synthetic? ... what viscosity rating does it have?

I've been running SYN3 in all 3 - but I'm open to change. I read the Amsoil bulletin - but you know, I read the harley bulletin too - they're both selling something they say is the best.

Seems like a lot of people like the Amsoil on here - what makes it better than the SYN3?

Also what's the deal with running the synthetic in the primary and tranny? No good? What's the best and why?

damn that's a lot of questions...

Generic atf. Might use trick shift next time.

Random thoughts:

Ever try one of those gear train/oil tests at a fair or demonstration? You know, the one where one gear trainis filled with conventional oil and the other identical gear train has the wonder oil in it?

Now think about dragging a big *** harley clutch basket and triple row chain through20W-50 versus ATF.

You lose hp and create more heat with the heavy oil.

I won't be using super heavy oil in my tranny either for the same reasons.

any "diesel" oil will work in the motor 10-40 or 20-50 as per owners manual

Just wasted too much $$ on sh^toil, I mean Amsoil, oops, in the chaincase. Clutch grabbed and shifting sucked. Just dumped the Amsoil after a week and am going back to Formula+.
