Always check the basics - Air, Fuel ,Spark
Good job on finding your problem sometimes we over think things and go beyond the problem.

Had the same problem. Thank you very much. Was a loose lead to coil.

Default 1997 HD FATBOY-Sputters and backfires

Good evening - I am at a loss and am turing to you guys for assistance!!

Beast!
1997 Fatboy - Evo engine - 32K miles
Stock Ignition and original coil, CPS, Voltage Regulator and Ignition module
Hypercharger air cleaner
Straight pipes - no baffles

I have checked for intake leaks
Changes the plugs & wires (start with the least invasive first)

Changed the original Crank Position Sensor - was melted so changed it to the newest version of the stock CPS to be on the safe side and to rule it out.

Checked the ignition coil per the Service Manual - checks out good
Battery 12.6 volts and steady

I just purchased the bike - rode it in Texas for the weekend and brought it to Illinois, rode it to dinner and just all of a sudden started to misfire. She starts, idles great a bit slow but idles fine - Problem - Rear Cylinder misfires/backfires thru the pipes - That indicates a rich scenario but I'm at a loss to the sudden onset.

I have traced several of these threads over the last 3 days trying to track this down but to no avail!!! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and Thank You all in advance.

You should post this in the EVO section.

It's about time for you to create a signature line so we know what Harley you are talking about. (Similar to my last line in my signature) But...Carb has 68 years of crud floating in the bowl?

One nice bike. I almost bought one similar..Went for 20K on Ebay over 4 years ago. Same year I was born..
