Open Primary Pros/Cons

Open Primary Pros/Cons
Love the look of an open primary. Want one on my 14SG down the road...
Having never had one, here is what I know... add to the list with me and suggest a brand to go with....
Pro's
Don't have to buy Primary fluid.
easier to check primary belt tension.
Runs cooler
can handle more power
Cons
Wider (doubt this will bother me since I am 6'3")
things (pant legs) can get caught in belt (I like the guarded versions that I have seen out there)
Noisier (doubt this will bother me either)
What else is there?

A belt does not run cooler than an oil lubed chain.
How many primary chains have you trashed because the chain couldn`t handle the power?
You`ll snap a transmission shaft before you even make the primary chain sweat...
The enclosed chain does everything mechanical better than an open belt primary.

The fact that it's 3 or 4 times as wide as the final drive which ups the odds substantially and the fact that it's directly behind and not all that much above the same level as the front tire which will be kicking the rocks back.

My brother in law has a 3" BDL and yea he caught a rock (no guards) and all it did was put a small hole in the belt. He has been using it still for 3-4 years now. Yea it's a little noisier than an enclosed chain system, clacking of the clutch plates and whinning of the belt and pulley's but not to the point where it's gonna give you an issue. If you do get one make sure it has steel pulley's. Aluminum no mater how good the qaulity will wear causing excessive belt floppage. Stick with a 2 1/4" system at the minimum. It'll handle at least 120/120 and some even more. specially if you get into the 3" belts..
I am running a Baker Drivetrain set upand SBD and love it. It's a lot quieter than most and has a good primary ratio at 1.54:1.
