SE comp sounds like a rock tumbler
Put SE comp on about 40K miles ago, just took a dump this past fall, made the bike very hard to start (starter drive kicking out and banging) when warm/hot.
Installed new SE comp and with a stethoscope it sounds like a rock tumbler inside but does not exhibit any hard start issues. I put the old one back in and it is nice and quiet but then the starting issues came back. I hate to say that I threw my money away on a new SE comp but it sure looks like what they sold me is junk.

I have 5 springs in this, 2 large <>, 2 smaller <> and a 5th one (that came with original SE comp) that sits < to the new SE comp. Is this what you mean or am I missing something?

Ok, I did not get a whole new kit, I got a 36500034A which is a compensator assembly that is an SE part. The difference is that I reused the original SE springs and did not buy a new rotor or springs, just the cam/sprocket/bearing/bolt assembly.
The part number on the spring kit is 83936-09A which I assume would be the same spring kit in all SE comps from 2009 on.
Are you suggesting that the spring is too loose and that is the source of the noise?
I ran the engine with the primary cover off (when I still had the Hayden tensioner installed (since replaced the SE manual tensioner 3650020) and when the problem got worse I could see the chain momentarily tighten up so much that it was collapsing the springs on the Hayden and bouncing the shoe off of the mounting bracket.

Sounds a lot like mine. Did comp along with 30 tooth sprocket back in October. Noticed the knock as soon as I pulled it outside of shop. Noticed that it was worse when bike was cold and RPM dipped under 1000(running S&S 583). So I used the PV to raise the idle up to around 1100 and then I rarely heard the knock. Was using Hayden at the time and at some point when work got a little slow I pulled the cover and watched it (with idle back down to 1000) and the shoe on the hayden was banging on the bracket when it made the noise. So I thought all I had to do was put the stock tensioner back in and I would be good to go...and at first it seemed that way, but I could still hear it at times so I knew it wasn't right. If you use a stethoscope on the primary it sounds like a rock tumbler inside. I have it back at shop now getting it ready for FL vacation and I just installed the SE manual tensioner and I put the wasted SE comp in (just to see if it was quieter) and the rock tumbler noise is gone but the starting issues are back. I guess the new comp is working OK but the noise just ain't right.
