Default 5 speed transmission interchange for 1990 softail

Hey all. I have a 1990 heritage softail. well i decided to hit the burnout pit after a run this summer and my transmission stripped a couple gears and broke 2 forks.. Ive been trying to find what year gear sets would bolt in my case, and work with my clutch.. info i have found so far has been contradicting and confusing. so is it 1990 - 2006 or 1990 - 1999? any help would be much appreciated. thanks

Any 5 speed gearset from 1990 or later will fit, plug and play.

Something to consider while the transmission is apart...

If you find a gearset from a 2000 or later Softail, or a gearset from a 2001 Big Twin, it may also have the shift drum/shift pawl.

This late model shift drum and pawl will give you much better shifting.

If you upgrade to this later model shift drum/pawl, you must also change the bushing in the case (P/N 3479-00)

I have a 1999 gearset and a 2005 shift drum in my `89 Softail.

Also keep in mind, if you get a gearset still installed in the trap door, make sure it has a drain plug, if it doesn`t have a plug, you can drill and tap it for a 1/8 inch tapered pipe plug.

The Road King gearset will work, but if you use the Trap Door from the Road King, you will have to drill and tap for a drain plug.

Or you could transfer the new gearset to the old Trap Door, if you do you must replace the trap door bearings.

If it were mine, I would use the `05 Trap Door, it uses upgraded bearings, you just need to remove the shafts from the bearings, remove the bearings from the Trap Door, drill and tap for a 1/8" tapered pipe plug, install new bearings, install shafts into bearings and you are good to go.

Keep us posted and we can help you get it done.

Isn't there some issue with how the neutral light works when going between early TC and later TC 5 speeds? IIRC the cover changed and neutral switch changed.

Yes the neutral switch location moved in the twin cam covers. If you run a twin cam shift drum you have to run a twin cam top cover. Polarity is the same as the 90-97 which is normally open. The location didn't move much but enough to screw up the functionality.
