Default Starter gear gets stuck on clutch basket..... sometimes!

I have 2001 dyna twin cam 88. I just replaced the shift shaft seal and put everything back together. It starts no problem 8 out of 10 times, but sometimes the starter gear gets stuck on the clutch basket gears and wont retract. if I give it a little tap it go right back in. and ideas of how to solve this issue would be great.

Loosen your primary cover bolts and lift up on it as you tighten it back down , this will usually fix an occasional hang up

You might have tightened the center bolt on the pinion too tight. It will bend a small snap ring in the coupling to the starter and **** the shaft.

I just came back from an 800 mile trip. the starter got hung up about 6 times the entire time. when it got stuck I would just put it in gear and rock it back and forth real quick, then it would retract and I could start it after that. the last 300 miles of the trip and probably 10-12 starts it hasn't don't it. so maybe problem solved.
