Default Primary re-fill

I just swapped out my FLHT standard primary cover with a Chromed version. Can I replace fluid through the check-level hole or do I add into the primary cover. I'd have to remove the passenger floorboard to get the cover off. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

As long as your getting it into the primary it doesn't matter.

Just refill through any of both holes, but if you do for the inspection hole, be sure to put the correct amount of oil your bike needs, as you won't be able to see the level of the oil with the clutch.

Your bike must be way different than my FLSTC. The only way for me to check my Primary is for me to take off the Derby cover. Is your bike different.

I believe the author of this post has meant to say, "clutch inspection or derby cover" when he called it a primary cover and a "primary chain inspection cover" when he said check-level hole.

And no, most 'b' motors do not have the primary chain inspection cover, but the FLHs did up until '06 when H-D put the primary self-tensioner in the Ultras and in '07 they put it in all of the FLHs and therefore removed the access cover.

I'm pretty sure that upuntil 2006 all Big Twin modelshad Primary Chain inspection covers except for the 2006 Dyna line of bikes since that was the first year of the six speed trannyand the auto primary chain tensioner which were only in the Dyna's along with 02 sensors. All other models still had the primary chain inspection cover and no auto tensioner. I don't know if any SE models had the auto tensioneror not before they were incorporated into all bikes in the 2007 model year and then there was no longer an inspection plate on any Big Twin.
