Default How much oil in the primary case?

I changed the oil in my 06 Ultra for the first time a few days ago (previously done by dealer). Everything went ok except I may have put too much oil (Syn 3) in the primary case. Owners manual said 32 oz (1 quart) but I was thinking I had read somewhere to keep filling until the oil runs out the big hole under the derby cover (while the bike is sitting upright). After about a quart and a third, I began thinking that sure is a lot of oil.

So I cut it off at 1 1/3 quarts. Is that too much? What would be the harm? Should I drain off the excess. I haven't run it since changing the oil other than long enough to fill the oil filter.

Thanks,
Gary in Virginia

The oil should go NO HIGHER than the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring.....

You START at 32 oz. and go little by little until you get it to the correct level......

FWIW, the Service Manual is worth it's weight in gold for this kind of info.....

I think it takes about 36-37 oz. to get the oil to the bottom of the spring on mine.

(while the bike is sitting upright).

The fluid levels are based on the bike sitting on the jiffy stand, not perfectly upright..if you are filling the primary while on a bike jack you will get a false reading..

For a B-T, you don't need more than 32-oz (1-qt) for the primary....Now drink a cold one!

Thanks everyone for your feedback. By "spring" I presume you mean the flat spring (about 4-5" in diameter) pressed against the smooth fly-wheel looking thing (the clutch diaphram?)?

If I am correct, then I should fill to the bottom edge of the spring with the bike resting on the jiffy stand. Is that right?

One quart only....Overfilling isn't good. My H-D mechanic says it makes the motor work a little harder.

my manual says 280z. but i just put the whole quart in and that submeged the primary chain just enough to let it throw the oil around!!

I found a picture of a clutch. Is this the correct level? On the jiffy stand?

Yes if the bike is standing upright, not on the jiffy stand. My '06 owners manual sez 1qt. or no higher than the bottom of the diaphragm spring which i said earlier is about 37oz.
I fill to the bottom of the spring and have had no issues.
