Default Since the inner primary is off...

Anything else I should be looking at?

Looking back, there's been a couple times where my bike wouldn't shift from 2nd to 3rd, but then the problem disappeared. It's happened twice over the course of 18 months, both on very cold nights.

People talk about the shifter lever, quad seal, etc...

I've about had it with "digging deeper" and finding new issues, but, while I have the inner primary off, any suggestions as to what I should look at?

94 FXSTC just in case.

Harleys don't shift well cold period. Hows your shifter arm on the tranny? Nows the time to pay attention to it if it's loose.

ok, so the two times were on 30ish degree nights. makes sense. it's shifted fine ever since

shifter arm...it was on there very tight...what would loose be? do you mean the shaft that it attaches to that goes into the tranny? There's a retaining ring and a spacer. I should look at the manual but is there a tolerance for play here?

Lucky for me I already have a chrome inner. Well, a Delkron inner that I had chromed by someone who did a crappy job and left high spots on the lip

but I can't afford to replace that, SO...it stays. Thanks for lookin out for me style-wise, David!

As long as it doesn't move from side to side and seems tight I would button it back up.

Do you have the latest configuration pulley, nut and lock? Check the integrity of the lock bolts. If you still have the old configuration, now is the time to upgrade it.

I always replace all the seals and the pulley spacer if I have the inner primary off.

I knew someone was gonna say that. Must have read it somewhere

is the "new configuration" the lock plate and two bolts? If so, yes, I have that.

There's orange RTV on the tranny back there...last shop to work on it must have pulled the tranny pulley, and the bolts actually look pretty new compared to the pulley so I'm guessing it's been done.

I couldn't get that nut off if I wanted to, Dan. It's another monster like the comp nut, no?

I can pull the shaft itself in and out of the tranny a tad, and if I grab the lever I can move the shaft also only a little, but nothing that seems excessive

hilarious...I marked the shaft where the opening was on the lever to keep the same positioning, and then proceeded to wipe the damn mark off the end of the shaft!

DAMN it's a good thing I'm not getting paid to do this.

Anything specific about positioning that lever?
