There's an article on clutches in the June issue of American Rider. Joe Minton said that ATF is a poor choice for the primary. His reasoning is that while it is fine for the clutch plates it is not good for the chain and gears over time.
Not sure he is correct as I have used ATF on and off for years without issue.
Pretty sure my 92 Chev 3/4 ton 4x4; 454/5speed uses ATF in the transfer case. Chain and two gears. 90k miles and doing fine. Using Type F in primary on bike. Seems to be doing well.

Yup, that's what makes me wonder if Minton knows what he's talking about.
My 77 GMC 4x4 uses 10/40 in the transfer case, NP 203 it has chains, what they say is don't go lighter cause it's not optimum for the chains and don't go much heavier and don't use gear oil cause it(the lubricant) won't be thrown around the gearcase and it needs to be, like a primary.
Anybody ever tried this stuff? I hear it is suitable for use in a Harley Primary?
JK...Sorry i had to,lol
Seriously what is the benefit of running ATF in your primary?
For me....it's cheaper, you can get it just about anywhere and I like the feel of the clutch. Most of the clutch manufacturers recommend using ATF to soak the friction discs in before installation.
