I was just out there last summer. Motorcycles are not allowed in the valley. You can ride to the visitor center (i think it was 15 dollar admission) to go into valley floor you have to drive or take a tour. I also rode up and down the moki dugway a couple times. just think "marbles" but there are a few good paths in the road to stay in to reduce the amount of marbling you will have. Also its a good bumpy ride. Great views and worth the ride if you as me. I stayed at the San Juan in in Mexican Hat. Goulding is a good place to eat as well. enjoy.

About the beer thing ,we brought plenty of our own beer, the Navajo nation Indians are not allowed to have beer,(even @ home) not all stores sell beer but I don't think you'll get in trouble for having some we didn't have any problem and drank @ every stop, Even the gas station parking lots!

Kayenta is the major town. But not must there. MacDonalds, market, gas station. Only decent hotel is Hampton Inn. Be sure to fill up there if you are heading west. Next services are Tuba City.

I recommend making a loop off 160 starting 191 near Mexican Water to 163 and west to Mexican Hat. Then down 163 to Monument Valley

This is rolling out great info!! Thank you all. I had seen suggests to make that part of a trip to UT but little else about it. I saw 'Yellow Ribbon' with the Duke on the western channel here last week and got to wondering what was up close there. Googled some tours and decided to ask here.
Again, Thanks!

One more tip.
Buy handmade jewelry in the valley. You buy it direct from the Navaho women who make it. Great souvenirs

Perhaps there are different perceptions of "The Valley". The part of "The Valley" managed by the Navajo Tribe and where the Visitor Center is, is the starting/ending point for an expansive series of unpaved dirt roads allowing up-close viewing of the peaks and mesas that make up the most scenic parts of the experience. I was told, (and there is signage) prohibiting 2-wheeled motorcycles on this portion of Monument Valley. Quad-wheeled, off-road vehicles are only permitted by private tour vendors. Having driven most of the native-American managed portion of the valley in a rental car, I wouldn't chance to ride a motorcycle on those roads, unless if was an off-road type, which is not allowed anyway. PLUS, people drive like idiots on those dirt roads. There are the slow ones... taking their time and enjoying the views, and there are the impatient ***-holes who'll ride on your ***, then whiz-by at the first opportunity; only to be right in front of you at the next scenic point. There are ruts, ditches, rocks, holes... all manner of hazards on those roads. The scenery is breathtaking, though.

On the paved/main roads that traverse "The Valley" you'll see more than a few motorcycles. You can ride to the Navajo Visitor Center, but just not off-pavement. Being unaware of the dirt roads, I inquired at the booth, thinking about a future ride to the site in planning a group ride for later. They gave me a printed guide with the rules.

I stayed in Kayenta. At dinner I asked the server what kind of beer they had. She laughed and said, "No kind. We're dry..." So I asked where I could get a few beers. She laughed again... and pointed, "Two-hundred miles THAT way." I had an iced tea.
