My rule of thumb is mid to late June KSU. Mainly if you are going to the NW USA since the unpredictable WX up there is likely more apt to be better riding WX and less stormy.
Has worked very WELL for me over the years. Or I've been VERY lucky.
If you are headed straight west to CA or southern, then cooler WX would be nicer of course.

Depends on the route? Endless possibilities based on your start and stop point.
If you went north and went to Colorado, Wyoming, Utah etc, heading to Northern Cali you may want to wait until July, otherwise you are gonna see snow.
If you stay south and go across Texas, NM, AZ, then yeh get it done by June or you will cook.

October is good month in CA. Late September the tourist have left. Prices drop. Vacancies
Don’t know how much time you have. I suggest starting in Reno Nevada.
