I am going to stugis in 2012 and have been calling around to a lot of places. I am finding a lot that will not take reservations till after the first of the year and some that haven't decided how much the rates will be. Still looking.

Check around Rapid City. There have been a bunch of new hotels built and we stayed last year for just over $100.00 a night.

I've been several times, stayed in rapid city once. Posters correct, largest suburb/city in area and plenty of hotels. BUT, also a looong drive from the Sturgis area at night (or early am) with animals and drunks abound.

Maybe at KOA's in Custer & Deadwood....but don't know of any other campgrounds that aren't just open camping. You know, find a spot and pitch your tent.

We stayed at Suzies Encampment for $20.00 a night last year. It's about .7 miles from the interstate 2 miles east of Sturgis off exit 34, just east of the National cemetery. It's nothing fancy but has hot showers, laundry, a small bar and restaurant area in what used to be a shed. Good cheap food, friendly people. http://www.suziescamp.com/index.html

I got lucky for 2012 and go into the Alex Johnson for about 100. per night for half the week. I spoke with some other Rapid City hotels and they said if you dare to take the risk, they were selling walk in rooms for less than the standard summer rates just to rent rooms, a far change from years past. A nice place but a bit of a drive is Presidents View in Keystone. It would take close to an hour to get to Sturgis but for the Rally week Keystone has all the fun that I need and the beer is much cheaper. You will likely find hotel rates of $99. per night for all nights but M-T-W are higher and I think they are $119. or $129. if staying all three.

If you want to be real close to Sturgis your best bet or maybe only bet is going to be to camp. We have done that several times but I now like the comfort of the hotel.

P.S. the hail storms in SD can be a bitch in a tent!!!!

Here you go. Right in the heart of party central. I saw these cabins last year. They are off to the side of the full throttle saloon. There is a fence around the area and a security dude checking for keys to keep the riff raff out of the area.

check it out. Next time I do sturgis I'll stay here or in a place like it...
