Never been to Sturgis, but 2012 is the year, I've been looking for hotels, and have found nothing but high prices. Never having had the pleasure yet, perhaps I'm not looking in the right area and or right hotel Anyone have recommendations?

Thanks!
Been going to Sturgis for many years and high prices/minimum stays for motels have really kicked in over the last 10 years. You might look at stuff in the southern part of the Black Hills for some moderation...the ride north is nice but if you're partying in Sturgis area it can be a long, cold ride back. Maybe Rapid City, but I've always felt it was too far out. YMMV. Some years I've gone without reservations and have always found something...especially the last couple years. Not cheap but you get to pick how many nights you really want to stay. If you're heading further west, summertime rates in WY, MT, etc. are all at seasonal highs in the interesting towns.
Some of the bigger campsites put up small cabins. Not exactly a hotel, but is a step up from camping in a tent. I think prices usually range right around the thousand mark for a week.
Check out the Rocket Motel in Custer, SD. Stayed there in 2010 and the place was great ( back to the 50's style ) the owners cooked on BBQ 2 nites for everyone and very clean and affordable. Great riding from that area.

Great point. I camped at Rush No More last year and noticed they had some cabins like that. BTW, first class campground and great for Sturgis, Spearfish & Deadwood. Also check No Name Campground, they had quite a few more.
I would recommend camping if you want to stay cheaply I the heart of things. We stayed at the broken spoke campground for 129 a person. We took all our crap on the two bikes but you can ship there and back.our neighbors did it and worked great. That way you can ship whatever would make you comfy. Also buffalo chip will let oh rent a fancy tent all set up. You can also rent a camper from them. Right in the middle of stuff and way cheaper than any hotel.
Palace express or any hotel in Lead, SD. It is basic with reasonable rates and centrally located. About 5-10 minutes west of Deadwood, which is 15 minutes west of Sturgis. Lead is east of Spearfish and all of the scenic riding. IMO, it is perfectly situated.
