Default 2019 CVO 117 stage 3 or stage 4

This is where I am. I can't decide which way to go, or whether to go at all. Coming from a 103 to a 117 was a nice jump. Now I fall into what's next? What could make me wonder how close I am to breaking the back tire loose? If you were to take a 117 stage 3 vs stage 4 on a quarter mile, or heck, all out for a mile, how are the two going to compare? Is a stage 4 going to pull 2-3 lengths every gear?

I've heard with a stage 4 you will be forced to adjust your riding style to take advantage of the mod. Don't shift into 6th under 100MPH. My riding style is more 2500-4000 rpm. Stage 3 seems to give more middle response and stage 4 comes in at 4000 rpms (but blows like hell to 6000 rpm).

This is exactly why I went Stage 3 and no regrets. Plenty of power where I spend most of my time riding at. Assuming you're staying with the HD tuner for warranty purposes I think it's a better overall package than Stage 4 for most riding conditions.

Local dealer has had 2 guys that said screw the warranty and went with an aftermarket tuner that used Stage 3 cam and Stage 4 heads with excellent results. I considered trying it with the HD tuner and there is a dealer a couple hours away that will dyno the bike with the harley tuner and stage 3 cam/4 heads and has gotten nice results as well, but they've also pretty much said that if there's a problem with sumping or other issues down the road the MoCo would likely deny a warranty claim because even though it's HD parts it's not an approved configuration. Not trying to start a warranty conversation and my opinion on it doesn't matter, just sharing what I was told by that one dealer.

With stories upon stories of initial “sumping” issues right out of the gate you may want to put some mileage on her first.
Just my .02 and the 117 stock is very nice and not so many years ago just the 117 over the 110 would have been the big deal.

It seems odd to me - people would buy a 2018 107 and "stage it" up to 117.

Now they buy a 2019 177 and... still stage it up??
Is no one actually ever just happy with the bike they bought? Or is this just that the bike you buy is such rubbish that you need to keep doing the "stages"?
Or is it just "bragging rights", the bigger engine = bigger dick syndrome?

Still... people do buy a small V8 then bore it out larger (and, yes, I think they're strange too).

That was meant to be "114", not "177", dumb typos

My 114 makes me happy every time I ride. I have ridden the 117's and not a lot of difference. Maybe a little more low end torque but feel much the same.

I ride two up 90% of the time and have more power than I could ever need.

I'd save the money for handle bars, Pro-Action rear suspension, riding gear and gasoline!

Ride safe.

I think you’ve answered your own question. Stage 4 seem to suit folks who rev out the engine to redline often. It really does change the characteristics of the engine. It also does not suit my riding style either. I would go the Stage 3 if it was me. But like others have mentioned, sumping is an issue. I believe HD covers engine mods under the bike warranty if the S3 kit is fitted within 60 days of bike purchase. That might be worth it for a longer warranty coverage?

Roadie13, tell me about your stage 3. How much was it total? How was the performance for you? Is it what you expected? Is yours an M8? If so, which one?

I has nothing to do with bigger dick. Some people love the faster acceleration and power. And a staged up 107 to a 114 is much faster than a 114 or 117 for that matter.

Really? I'd not have expected that... maybe small variations but not "much faster".

Isn't 114... 114...? Regardless of it it started out as a 107?

(not shitting you, colour me gobsmacked if it's true - I could expect, like I said, variation in output, but "much faster"?)

Why would a 107 upped to 114 be that much better than a 114 factory made? Would that be all the extra airflow and fuel control that's added as part of the upgrade that might not be on the factory 114s?

The dick thing was a joke (well, sort-of), based on cars - see a Porsche and you know he's "compensating".. haha.

=================================

I looked at the specs for the '19 114 FXDR - 90 HP and 161 Nm torque. Hmmm... (thinking)

I SEE... a little more torque but it expands and keeps it available to much higher revs.

Same here - specs within range of each other but the upgrade has it available for much longer as you rev.

Interesting. What do they do that stops the drop of of power and torque? (It's almost Japanese in the higher-rev torque available)
