What about Red Lines 20W60 fully-synthetic ester formula motorcycle oil? Has a lot of zinc and phosphorus.

Zinc, avg PPM 2125
Phosphorus, avg PPM 2100

"Specifically blended for air-cooled V-Twin engines with traditionally wide clearances like Knuckleheads, Shovelheads, and Panheads engines."

Shovelhead hydraulic lifters like the heavier straight weight oils, multis like 20/50 will work but the valve train is a lot noisier. I personally have not tried the Red Line yet so can't say how it does.

Red Line is very good stuff...
If I have a New Shovel...built properly, I use 20-50...if an unknown or high Mileage...I use 50w or maybe higher...

60w was the standard recommended oil for the Shovels. They came stock with single-piece oil scraper rings. However, with the introduction of the Evo with new pistons and 3-piece oil rings, shovelhead owners have that option. Years ago, I retrofitted the Evo 3-piece oil rings to my Shovel's stock (Bohnalite) pistons.

I have used 20w50 in the bike for the last 90,000 miles or so with no problems. Even with my high mileage, oil consumption is so low that I do not have to add between 4000-5000 mile changes.

Seems to me we had 3 piece oil rings long before the EVO...

74" motors ran the single fat oil ring, the 80" came the newer 3 piece but I have run across virgin 77 & 78 1200's with the 3 pc. Factory was doing some weird **** those years I've seen all kinda mixed & matched engine internals on the 1978 model into early 79.
