Default Starter Shaft Housing Replacement...

Unfortunately both mounts are broken on my starter shaft housing on my 77 FXE so I need to replace it....

The only 2 other things that I think I'll need are the shaft bearing and the o-ring seal.... I don't believe I need the washer, that was only used 71 and earlier.

Is there a preferred part for this repair or will the Drag Specialties parts work just fine? Also are there any hidden items or issues that I should be aware of? Thanx.....

I always wanted a spyke starter because they make the best shovelhead starter hands down...but I never could justify the price.

Well ultima copied it...I figured for half the price I would give it a shot...8 years later I can say it was a good gamble...no starter using the Harley gear reduction can spin the motor as fast as this thing.

Do I have to remove the oil tank? Also do I have to open the primary or anything like that...? I'm hoping that all I have to do is remove the 2 bolts that go into the back of the primary along with the trans support plate....

I do like the sound of the faster speed of the Ultima... Will I need a bigger battery..?

Also what starter relay do you all use...? I need to replace that as well.. Mount is broke....

You should also look at replacing the bearing in the outer primary that the end of the shaft goes into. It's cheap and there's satisfaction in doing the job correctly.

Got the starter today and started replacing it, till I found that I also need a gasket.... No mention of that anywhere that I saw.....So it'll have to wait till tomorrow when I can get some gasket material and make one.... Pics to follow tomorrow... Actually it's a relatively easy replacement... Probably one of the easiest things you can do to an old FXE...

Default Need help more problems...

So I went to put the new starter in today. Made a new gasket and as I went to bolt this up it was a little difficult. It started hitting the transmission and I'm saying to myself, this just doesn't look right. So I tried to keep bolting it down and it started getting Tighter and Tighter and would never line up properly. I went and looked from the other side of the transmission and you can see where the starter was going in at an angle.. So I took a good look where it was hitting the transmission and there was no way I was going to bolt this up. Obviously this was the initial issue that broke the starter housing off of there. Now if somebody could take a look at the top shift drum cover and the transmission and look at the way that cover mounts to the top of the trans. I'm starting to wonder if I have the right Transmission in this bike. I do know that I was told that it has a bunch of Andrew's gears in it Etc, is it possible this is an aftermarket transmission with the OEM shift top on it and that there's just not enough room to put the starter in or is the transmission out of alignment. I wouldn't think that it's the latter of the two alignment, because it's the inner primary that sets the proper distances (or alignment) right? Starting to think I got somebody's nightmare....

I would remove the oil tank so you can see better what you are up against...

I have ground aftermarket trans cases for just this reason...I bought an aluminum cutting burr for my die grinder to do it (ones made to cut steel clog up in 2 seconds)...did take much, and you really could tell after you mounted the starter.

Remove the tank and double check everything before you go that route.

Do you have the oil deflector and the dowel pins in place?
