Default Dipstick question the one in the bike not on it

Have a 77 FXE with oil tank under seat. The dip stick looks exceptionally long. I added 1 1/2 quarts of oil to the tank and the dipstick is telling me that it is up to the full mark. With that amount of oil the level is just barely over the point where the tank seem is welded together.

The dipstick measures from the bottom of the chrome cap where it makes contact with the oil tank to the bottom of the dipstick 5 5/8 inches.

How much oil do most people add to the tank on an oil change.

Have the factory service manual and did not see any info on oil changes. Could be me though.

Thanks,

Ron

you have the incorrect stick - fill it to 3 inches from the top of the tank ride it 1/2 hour with it on the k stand mark the spot - this way you can check it hot or cold in the stand

I have angle cut a mark with a hack saw so its correct at angle

Hi John,

Thanks for reaching out. I especially like the idea of marking it on the kickstand.

On a side note, I saw your picture that you use on the forum. I know we are a few weeks past Veteran's day, but thank you for your service.

As long as the tank is about 3/4 full you will be okay. I like the idea of marking the dipstick too.
