Default Super E on shovelhead

Thanks for the advice on the sealed primary before...some of my problems may have been that I probably didn't vent the primary properly when I sealed it...causing pressure and more leaks. Another thought (seeing as I haven't ridden the ol' bike in over 12 years...(it sat and collected dust thru an evo and now a streetglide), I used to run an S&S Super B carb...always ran ok but had to get used to it starting...I only had kick start...then went to a Super E (wanted the accelerator pump) and went thru 2 of these...seemed to always have cough issues, just never seemed best for it (it's bored to 80 inches with an Andrews B-grind cam). Don't know if should go back to B carb or try CV style or maybe give Mikuni a shot? Also, what's yer preferred oil weight to run in the shovels these days. Years ago we used to run 70 wt in summer (and that's in Wisconsin) which seems stupid now. Maybe 60 wt if I can find it?

Well, I am in Wisconsin as well and remember running the Kendall Nitro 70 oil too. That oil was used for the old solid lifter engines,in my cone engines I run the 20-50 W.
As far as the E model carb they are fine for a shovel but with the cough it could be caused by being to lean or the timming being retarted. That might be worth checking
before spending lots of money. It sounds like the bike sat for a while so when you check the points also check the advance as it could be sticking.

I'm a big fan of the S&S carbs. especially the B. But to honest, the trend seems to be to go with the CV. They are cheap as heck and all over ebay. So, though "I" would go S&S, the answer I'm giving is go CV.

I'm actually gonna update to an electronic ignition system... can run single fire if I want then.

Sounds to me like you may be jetted a little on the lean side or something. when do you get the cough? if at idle, turn the mixture screw out 1/4 -1/2 turn and see if it goes away. If it's when you open the throttle, it may be that the accel pump is misadjusted. just a thought. I've got an E on mine, and I loves it

S&S are good carbs when tehy are set up right, but it does appear the trend is to CV. Personally I buck the system entirely and run an SU carb, been running them since the late 80's and I love them. They are pricey though if you buy a new one.

Look at my photo galleries at some of the Super B's I have rebuilt. Maybe I can do something for you? You'll never find 'em as good as the ones I do. That's a promise my friend!!!
