Hello, I've just bought my 1980 shovel and have only had it 3 weeks, I've ridden it loads but now have a problem with the gearbox, firstly it's leaked most of the gearbox oil into the primary's I hear this is a common problem so I guess I need new seals there but it's started jumping out of top gear into neutral. I took the primary cover off and when I spin the clutch it looks as if the transmission shaft is bent or something, could this be why it jumping of gear. I think it probably needs a transmission rebuild, new bearing maybe gears, urgh big expense I guess. Also someone said that it has a later evo clutch fitted is this correct, thanks for the help

First of all Welcome to the site -

Now the clutch assembly you have is from an 1987 type Softail and the hub should not be walking around - the 4th gear bearing might be shot causing both issues jumping out of gear and the walk you are getting --

it all needs to come apart and be looked at by a shop that does that sort of work

if you are very mechanicaly inclined than help is possable on the site if you get stuck

 

Thanks for the reply, I'm taking it to a shop tomorrow to have the gearbox looked at professionally as it's a bit out of my depth and they might see things I don't, il keep it updated as to what I find.
