Default Wheel Centering/Squaring Technique

So I'm pretty **** about getting the wheel perfectly straight in the swing arm. What technique do you guys use to make sure the wheel is square? I have a few techniques that use a string that work great on sport bikes, but too much crap in the way on these bikes for that. Just curious. Thanks guys.

I made a simple gauge out of a piece of 1/8" steel rod and a couple pieces of aluminum to make a simple measuring device to go from the center of the swingarm to axle. Trying to use a tape measure is a PITA.
