I'm curious to see people's opinions, why they did certain things first, or waited until later? What was your decision to go *****-out on your motor right out the gate, or dial in your suspension before touching your motor?
I bought my FXDB new March of '14, got a good deal and couldn't resist. I ordered my exhaust before I even picked it up from the dealer. I quick bought the other bolt on 'stage 1' stuff AC and V&H FP3. Then I set it up for 2-up riding and throughout the process have done the little less expensive aesthetic things.
Now I'm about to pull the trigger on rear shocks and am contemplating building out the front suspension too, but I'm also toying with the idea of cams and 'light' transmission upgrades.
function/safety 1st... stage 1, oil cooler, brakes, suspension, security, lighting
fancy 2nd... not there yet. few things do just so i could stand looking at it.
if you speed the bike up, cooling and stopping could be things to consider.

When you did brakes, did you do dual discs? Or just rotors/pads? I'd really like to upgrade my brakes, especially considering the amount of 2-up riding I do and the added weight that comes along with it.

see my signature.
15" rotor up front. thick EBC rotor rear, s/s lines front and back. lyndall z+ pads front and back. dual disk is in progress. collecting parts. down to wheels, rotor, and tires. wheels are holding me up.
first off... having two bikes at the same time is far more expensive than I imagined...
Secondly there has not been an order. It has been "I want this" so I got it, or "I need this" so I got it or "I don't like this" so I changed it.
it all just happened as it happened. some things waited for funds, other things didn't.
Personally, seat should be first though. It changes the basis for everything else. I will now have to buy different highway peg mounts for the wide glide since I got a new seat for my birthday. It moves me forward and up a bit.
I did new exhaust with Stage 1 and LED signals before my bike left the dealer. Next was a sissy bar/backrest so my wife would feel more comfortable on the bike. Just did LED brake light with integrated signals yesterday. Next on the list will be the brightest headlight I can find and some brake upgrades (very nearly T-boned a pickup that left turned in front of me this morning--in his defense, he was looking into the sun and his windshield was filthy. Yeah... right. Don't think he could've seen a Freightliner through that windshield.....)
Next on the list will most certainly be a luggage rack and some small bags for the bike, and a quick detach windshield. Maybe a bigger set of cams down the road.....
EDIT: Seventy4blazer came up with a good one. A decent passenger seat is really a priority as well.....
Stage one first. Opens up the engine and performance.
Then onto seat and rear suspension to assist in comfort.
Through out the process little cosmetic mods as they come.
Next will be a full front end overhaul of springs handlebars and cosmetics. This just needs more planning and time and I haven't had a chance to do it yet. Prior I went with easy bolt on parts to get the mods kickstarted.
