It's not an entirely bad idea, I've never needed it but on long trips I carry the Reda as shown above. Seals well and stows in corner of hard bag

 

Since you asked; I carry mine in my cell phone. As others have correctly predicted, however, it never gets used. On a 1,000 mi trip, I'd be using the limited space on my ride for things I could not so easily replenish along the way. Thats just me.

I'd check with my Insurance carrier if I were you, just as a precaution.

 

So far I have not needed to carry extra gas. Normally when we ride on long trips, we're with my pal who is on a Tri-glide. His trike gets about 10mpg less than I get so whenever he stops to fill up, I top off, even if I really don't need to. Haven't yet needed to carry spare fuel. But if I felt the need, I'd probably get one of those saddle bag gas cans like shown in post #12 above

 

These must be some pretty good ribs to drive 940 miles. No rib joints near you?

 

200 miles between stops will NEVER work for me. 5 gallons at 36-38mpg. The numbers don't work.
Another thing to consider, even if you're carrying extra fuel and need it, you still have to stop to add it to the tank.
If it were me I'd talk to the group and try to get the stops to like every 150 miles or so. That would be almost 3 hours In the saddle and, for me anyway, it's time to stretch. In group rides you have to accommodate the bike with the least range.

 

I only put 5 gals in my gas tank. That leaves room for 1 extra gal. No need to carry cans or such using my method. And it's safe.

 

There should not be an issue with a 24-hr gas station in most places on major roads. Most are usually within 100 miles apart.
