Some are suppose to have the rear in the air for belt tensioning. The soft tails you should have someone put weight on the rear (sit on the seat) to adjust.
That chain should have about 3/8 - 5/8 play I believe.
I see I am in the sporster forum so my numbers could be off. Since my adjusting nut is inside the primary other things are probably diff to!

Correct, and I have a Larin jack which is basically a knock off of the Sears red jack. A lift would be good for this job though. A jack would be mostly in the way on this job. My jack was free as I got it as a gift for this past for Christmas. Having a jack or lift is nice for most jobs though.

He needs to tighten the primary chain, not the drive belt. Yes, this is different than yours.

you do not need a lift do it while it is on the ground. you will need a ruler to get it right...
i use a sears on all the bikes i work on (either that or a table lift)
here are some pics...

Then on rockets you have to get creative! jack stands and frame sliders!

Default jack question

I just bought a red jack like the one in your pics..but from Canadian Tire Eh!
Where do you strap your bike to when you jack it up.....Are SEII slip-ons on a 1200 custom lower than the frame or does anyone use this type of jack with this set up....

If anyone has a sled, can you convert these jacks to work with a snowmobile to do track tension, etc.??? thanks

I got one from harbour freight for $59, has 4 little loops to tie it down, $19 for 4 straps. I just use it mostly to clean my wheels. If you are going to use it as much as jrk5892, then I'd get a better one.

the harbor freight one sounds like a good option for me since my use would be pretty infrequent but I'll check out the Craftsman one also.
BTW, you all have helped a ton, thanks.
