I need some advice with 2 questions. I am putting on a rear fender rail (HD #91402-00) on the Deluxe and there aint no Stainless 5/16" Jam Nuts any where to be found around here.
1. Does anyone know if stainless nuts are solid stainless? I have ground down and cleaned up 2 Stainless nuts that will slide between the rear fender and the fender rail, but is the side of the nut that was ground, going to rust? I put a magnet on it and it isn't magnetic, so I think I may be OK. Anyone know for sure?
2. Secondly, I dry fitted the rail as my nuts were cooling(oh yea), and found the bottom of the rail will not slip over and around the bottom fender chrome trim. I tried everything and then out of desperation, I squeezed the lower end of the fender(and chrome trim) together with my hands. The fender narrowed up for the rail to go on but it is very tight against the chrome fender trim (they are actually touching tightly together on both sides). Did anyone else experience this and do you think it will be a problem vibrating or chrome on chrome rubbing with the rail and the trim? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Not sure if it helps .. but I used stainless 5/16 nuts that were half the thickness .. I got them from somewhere here in the UK .. I can check if youd like ?

Thanks guys. I will use the ones I made just to get it on and then order some off the net and replace them later. Hadn't thought about ordering jam nuts. I did find out stainless bolts, washers, and nuts are generally solid stainless, not just a coating. A magnet will tell.
