A lot of good advice so far. Whether or not the Dyna is a better bike than the Softail, if you really want the Softail and get the Dyna because you just couldn't wait, you'll never be happy with the Dyna. Just stick it out and get the one you want.

Tell the dealer what you want, he'll dealer trade for the color you want.
If not then you're gonna have trouble later on with him.
Of course he's gonna push what he has on the floor.
That's easier for the salesman.

Before I bought my Deluxe I test rode the Deluxe, Heritage, Custom, Street Bob and even the Street Glide. I dont know if it was just the bob I rode but it had a nasty vibration through the pegs, much, much worse then my Sportster had. The vibration at idle is cool, but int he end if you want to ride the "Cadilac" or Harleys wait for the Custom.

Ride both, buy what feels good to you. The feel of a Softail is very different from a Dyna. Here are a few of the differences;

1. Softail has more rear unsprung weight, so bumps will be slightly more harsh.

2. Dyna has rubber engine mounts. This makes the engine mounting more complex. Below around 2K RPM, the engine suspension bottoms out and the bike shakes like a Brit thumper. Above that, it smooths out, but you will still feel a bit of movement if your leg touches the airfilter. Some find this annoying, some don't.

3. Softail has a balance shaft for vibration control. The engine is bolted directly to the frame, making life simpler for the mechanic. This balance shaft takes a measurable amount of power to spin. So, if you absolutely HAVE to be first to the next redlight, get a Dyna.

So, just buy the one that feels best when you ride it. If you don't, it's likely to become a garage queen.

I also think that the raked out front forks are cool on the Glide.

You can't compromise on the bike you want when spending so much. Tell the dealer you are ready to buy a Softail Customas soon ashe can get one. If you don't get a call in a week, find another dealer that is not lazy and unmotivated.

And regarding local dealer loyalty, don't worry about it. They won't be loyal to you regarding preferential service.
Right on. Go where you have to go, it's TOO much money to spend, and trust me after they get the ca$h the dealer will barely know you ! (speaking from experience). Also, make sure they have a dyno, ans a qualified Dyno tech !

It's not a Dyna vs Softail thing in my mind ... It's about you getting the bike you want. Ten years ago when you had to wait months for a big twin, you might need to compromise a bit more. But those days are gone. Tell the dealer what you want and make them get it for you. If that is asking too much, find another dealer.

If the dealer isn't prepared to get you the model & colour you want, do not use that dealer. If they aren't prepared to offer any kind of service to get your deal, imagine how they'll behave once they have it!!
