Default Wheel bearing replacement problems on 2007 fat boy

Hello all,

This is my first post on here and was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on my current situation.

I am currently working on a 2007 FLSTFB and I just replaced the front wheel bearings. Now, when I installed them I followed the manual and installed the brake disc side bearing first and the right side bearing second. Upon putting the axle back in with the smaller sized spacer on the right and the larger one on the left I noticed that not only the wheel isn’t centered with the fender.(I’ve read about the off-set nonsense with the 2007 fat boy) but also the right side of the hub was almost pressed against the right side slider and the wheel was extremely difficult to turn with the axle inserted all the way.

After taking everything apart, it seems to me that the internal spacer sleeve is too short, thus allowing the right side bearing to press into the bore of the hub further than it should. (This appears to be about 5/16 of an inch)

The only solution I can see her is to pull the right side bearing back out and replace the internal spacer with a longer one and install another new bearing.

My hope is that someone on here has run into the same problem, as I have replaced 100’s of sealed bearings and have never run into a situation quite like this.

I should also note that the entire front end of this bike is stock and originally had the 9276 bearings installed and that is what I replaced them with.

Thanks guys.

My brake side bearing is set deep in the bore, not flush.
Does your rotor line up correctly with the caliper ?
Did you torque the axle before tightening the slider cap ?

Didn't you re-use your center spacer sleeve? ... If not, didn't you use a sleeve that's the same length that you removed?

BTW, it's your second post

Thanks so much for the insight.

Yes, the problem was the brake disc side bearing. It needed to be pressed in about 5/16 more than what I had. I ended up pulling the right side out and pulling in the left until it seated all the way. Wheel went right together. I use a pit-posse wheel bearing install/removal tool. I swear when I installed the left side the other day my tool bottomed out. However, obviously that wasn’t the case.

Needless to to say I feel like an idiot now, but I’m glad the solution to this was something simple and (in my case) something stupid.

Thanks again!!
