1988 FXSTC Troubleshoot
I have a 1988 FXSTC, I was travelling the other night at 60mph and the bike shut down for no apparent reason. I have the original style ignition switch and I believe that may be the problem but unsure. If I turn the switch once to ignition, the bike started. When I turned it to the second position, the lights came on but the bike stalled. If I try to start the bike in the second position, the lights come on and the bike will not start. I was able to get home with the flashers and the tail light, which all worked in the first position. Is it a safe bet to change the ignition switch? I was going to tear into it today.
I had same year bike for about 15yrs, pretty much swapped everything by the time I sold it, I had a wire come loose from ignition switch once that gave me problems, then had some problems with it that putting a new ignition switch took care of, I'd check loose wires on switch and battery and if all good then put a new switch on, If I remember right it wasn't very expensive anyway, but I"ve slept some since owning that bike,
I am the original owner and do remember changing this switch only once in the 32 years of having the bike. Looking for loose wires would be my first guess and then inspecting the roller contacts. The battery is new, but I do know that the vibration wreaks havoc with this bike. I do not mind that at all and like the rigid mount. I appreciate your input and will put it to good use. Ride safe!
