Default Softail died while driving, need help getting back on the road

Hello guys,

I really need some help. My 05 Softail died while driving and is now stuck on a parking lot.

After the engine turned off while driving I checked the fuses, all are good.

What is weird is that when turning to Ignition it is dead. On Accessoires the tail lights are on (sometimes flicker).

When i am on Ignition and remove the headlamp fuse my odometer comes back but the system relay is clicking. Still not starting without the headlamp fuse tho.

Now I am a bit clueless what could be the issue and where to look at.

Thanks for any help and sorry if my english is not perfect. :-)

Have you replaced the battery lately?
I replaced mine a while back and had similar issues. It turned out I was sold a bad battery.
Not sure it this helps at all...good luck!

Hey, thanks for the reply.

No the battery was not replaced. Also it seems good because the Accessoire position gives me the tail lights working.

Idk maybe it is really bad. I can check later how much volt it gives when i have some tools here at the bike.

Have it load tested, it can show a good 12.5 volts and not be good, so have it tested.

My guess is the ignition switch on the console is corroded. If you can get the console off with a 1/2" wrench and maybe wiggle the wires to get it to work so you can get home to clean it.
Here is a link to a how-to on cleaning it.

Was much easier to do the first time when the pictures were available.

that happened to me on my shovelhead years ago on the interstate. turned out the negative screw loosened up off the battery. now i use blue loctite on battery term screws. doesn’t take much to lose connection

Okay i went there in the dark now. Checked battery cables, retightened them. Also checked the ignition, no corision. Anyway made it clean + some WD 40.

Nothing helped. I think this will take some more research. Probably have to get it towed home first tomorrow.

Could some wire be blank and cause this issue? Maybe gonna get a new battery just out of curiosity first.

Really a pitty, i hate eletrical issues. They are pain in the *** sometimes.

I will keep you updated!

Don't just change your battery. I did that, and it turned out to be a bad ground. I'm pretty sure someone with a softail will be along to help you find your problem.
