Took a pic from a book from 2000 showing bikes at Sturgis. Hardly any touring bikes in sight. Now it seems everyone and their brother has a touring bike. I have owned 6 or 7, but am trying to stay content with my old Fatboy.

I know a few guys that just ride locally that have Street Glides... I don't get it. I was at the dealer getting parts for my 2000 Fatboy and they tried to talk me into a Street Glide, I told them naw, then I'll look like every other Harley on the road. But, to each his own.

"Hardly any touring bikes in sight." Those were the good old days. Now it's all about wind management and storage but then again so is my truck.

The Fatboy was the most popular Harley for a lot of years. When Harley released the CVO Electraglide in 2004, who would have known the trend they were starting? They followed it up in 2005 with another CVO Electraglide and these were the precursors to the 2006 release of the Streetglide. Given the demographics of most Harley riders, its not surprising that as Softail riders got older they moved to the touring bikes. Especially, if you actually travel on the bike. Also, most guys are hauling the little lady and all that she needs to carry…lol. Anyway, yeah, things have changed. Its rare to see a chopper any more. Gone are the days of every dentist riding his Big Dog to the local bike night…lol.

Yep, times and tastes change no matter what decade we're in.

I think some of it is just that those of us riders that are left and riding today are getting a little older and want more comfort and ability to carry stuff. I like my FB because it's just a nice cruiser and that is what I do with it - cruise. But I have to say, I would not mind trying one of the touring bikes like a Road glide some time.
I got hooked on the FatBoy back when they used it in the Terminator movie. I also took a liking for the Steetglide when my friend bought a brand new one in jet black and chrome in 2006. Beautiful bike.

Times and needs certainly change..... When I bought my first bike with a windshield, my '89 Heritage EVO, I took the windshield off when I got it home, and put the windshield back on when I went to sell it.

Eventually, I replaced that with a 2003 Heritage, and didn't use that windshield for four or five years...

Now I'm on my second bagger, but couldn't sell my '03 Heritage when I bought the first one... two different bikes, two different "feels"...

About 3 years ago, I was missing my old FXS shovel heads, but couldn't find a vintage FXS that wasn't, IMHO, messed up. So to compromise, I bought an '01 FXSTS Springer.... It feels very much like one of my old FXS lowriders... especially the air (and bugs) in my face...

I can't lie, I use the bagger for all my long, multi-day trips, but I drive all three frequently around town and on day trips....

Being retired and living in SoCal, I ride at least one of the bikes every week. Usually much more than that. I've actually ridden all three bikes in the same day...

The best of all worlds, I'm very fortunate indeed.....

Don't get me wrong I love the looks of a StreetGlide, but 70 is just a couple years away and the Fatboy is just a little lower and a little lighter. I would also hate to have some young whippersnapper have to pick up my bike in a parking lot
