Default First Softail Post Touring Bikes

Hey, after selling my '16 RGU last year and having owned a new Road King ('09) and new Street Glide ('07), I miss having a Harley as an option to ride vs my other bike (BMW 1250GSA).

I rode a '17 Fat Boy S with the 110ci engine with 17K miles at a dealer. I can buy it for $16,500. However, I'd prefer to keep the price down around $10K so came across a '10 Fat Boy Lo with 12K miles and V&H pipes but otherwise stock, adult owned but no records owned no by a LEO about 3 hours away. I can buy it for $10K.

I'd love some input from you guys who know these bikes. Anything that I ought to look for beyond overall condition and signs of mistreatment on the '10 Fat Boy? Is the 2017 S that much better a bike to spend another $6-$7K? I know it's subjective in the end, but thought I'd ask you guys since I have been a touring platform buy exclusively for a long time.

Pics of the 2010 attached

Thanks!!

I haven't ridden the newer 110 bike, so no input there. But I have an '09 FatBoy that has been trouble-free. Just oil changes & tires. The nice thing about the older bike is you can find lots of reasonably priced take-off accessories, and dress it up or down quickly ! Also, someone else has taken the hard depreciation of a new bike, and you can sell it off, with little or no loss, if you're not happy with it .
My '09 dressed up like a Heritage, but all quick disconnect. Easily stripped back down.

BTW. My last bike, before the FatBoy ,was an '04 GS1150. Owned and loved that bike for 11 years and 65K miles ! Only sold it because the super-tall seat height started to really hurt my bum right hip !. No such problem with with the Fatboy seat !!!

Thanks for the endorsement of these bikes. There are so many out there, my head is spinning. I’d like to spend less than what a dealer wants for an S bike ($16K) and I am trying to learn what the sweet spot is for <$10K. I can get a nice 2010 Fat Boy Lo with 11K miles for $10K and also saw a 2005 Fat Boy with 22K mikes for $7K completely stock…or a 2002 that has been modded stage 2 bars, wheels, etc etc for $6500….seems high there. So yeah, my head is spinning for sure. Or maybe a 2016 Fat Boy S with like 3K miles for $13K…? Sheesh

I’ve thought about grabbing an old 1150GSA but the servo brakes don’t sound fun to deal with!

I have a 2008 deluxe and a 2016 slim s.
They both have enough power for street cruising. The S with the CRUISE CONTROL is worth the extra money for long country riding and I believe the S will hold it's value better. Comes down to how you are going to use it I think.

Just a thought, the Fatboys come with 200 rear tires starting in 2007. If that means anything to you. I have a 2014 and like it a lot. The 2007’s have funky front wheel spacing, so I’d stay away from that year, IMO.

Rebuilding A 2010 fatboy. Original owner and placed over 100 thousand miles before parking it in 2015.

I believe the 2010 is a 96" engine, I know the 05 and 02 are 88".

I know many people prefer the 88 to the 96 however...

The 2010 will have the updates cam tensioners, that's a plus. Lesser bearings then the 02 in particular and a cast crank.

The 05 is also a cast crank, lesser bearings then the 02, if it has original cam tensioners this is something many people choose to update to the 07 and later tensioner.

The 02 is the most stout of all the engines. Cold forged crank and if memory serves me correctly is has the strongest crank bearings. Again, cam tensioner in this model year wasnt great BUT, you mentioned "stage 2 bars" I hope you ment "stage 2, bars" because if this bike has a cam it may very well have updated tensioner.

Some folks prefer the shorter stroke of the 88, it makes slightly less torque then the 96 but I believe it is the superior engine with its stronger components and more similar bore-stroke ratio for building performance with, should you go that route. (A stage 3 or 4 88 can be quite a fire cracker)

Something to comsider

I have the '16 S and I love it...the low is a sweet bike as well...cant go wrong with either honestly, but the 110 engine is awesome. Sam is correct the 2010 has the 96 motor, but I can attest that they are great engines....The S being 7 years newer, 110 motor, cruise, and hydraulic clutch, to me its worth it. Good luck!
