OTD prices
Play on Harley's website and assume that you can buy a motorcycle at MSRP (because you can at most dealerships). Add Freight, security system (if so equipped), and then start going through the catalogs for your accessories. A lot of dealerships will discount your initial purchase of accessories if they areordered at the time of purchase of the bike. I got 20% off of printed HD catalog prices.
Forget about extended warranty (for now), forget about pre-purchased service plans, and then you'll have local sales tax, a set-up fee (which probably includes motor vehicle registration), and you should be done.
Most dealerships will write all this up for you and/or disclose all fees (because that's federal law).
Realize that the purchase of a Harley is just a down payment for a lifestyle of living payday to payday so you can buy more accessories. This will never end.
If you are the type of person that thinksyou will just keep their bike stock, then please keep reading the forum, any group, any topic. Harley Davidson is a lifestyle, a passion, a pain in the butt, and is something way-past a motor and two wheels.
There are many brands of motorcycles that won't do this to you, so if things are really coming down to "price", you're scratching the wrong itch when considering a Harley.
With all that said; WELCOME, I hope you take the Harley plunge, and trust that you will be among brothers and sisters who know exactly what I am talking about.
I got O.T.D. at $21.9k in mid-July, and since then, spent another $4k on additional accessories to date. No end in sight.

Which Softail are you considering? There is a wonderful display of mods for every model out there. Even our patient Rocker supporters are around.
If you zero-in on a model or two, I'm sure the right folks will chime-in here.

$17,118 for '06 FXST bought on 6/2/06. Sticker was $18.3K. I offered $16K. We settled on a base price of $16.2K. Then by the time you add dealer setup, tags, etc, OTD at $17,118. I've spent about $2.5K since then on parts and I'm just getting started. Chrome engine kit is next.
