Is your bike HOT or is the entire problem the response of the ecm at idle--never have been clear on the exact problem ............................................
fishcop had an excellent solution if the ecm is a problem......is it ??
Several replys have questioned real HEAT issues...whats up ??????

I could be wrong but from my understanding of the '09 owner's manual the system can be turned on or off simply by holding the throttle all the way off for 5 seconds with the ignition on (bike running or not). When set on, parade mode kicks in automatically when certain conditions are met (temperature, rpm level, speed).

This list is an attempt to combine & include the various diagnostic trouble code lists (DTC's) used on ICM/ECM equiped HD models through 2008, into a single more up to date list.

Feel free to post any new or missing codes and I will add them to the list.

Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

AFR – Air Fuel Ratio

BAS – Bank Angle Sensor

CCM – Cruise Control Module

CKP – Crank Position Sensor. The CKP generates an “AC signal” which is sent to the ECM where it is used to reference engine position (TDC) and speed.

DTC – Diagnostic Trouble Codes

ECM – Electronic Control Module. (The Computer) Computes the spark advance for proper ignition timing and fuel control based on sensor inputs
(from CKP, MAP & TP sensors) and controls the low-voltage circuits for the ignition coils and injectors.
The dwell time for the ignition coil is also calculated in the microprocessor and is dependent upon battery voltage. The programmed dwell feature gives adequate spark at all speeds.

ECT – Engine Coolant Temperature. Sensor also controls the cooling fan relay that provides 12 Vdc to the fans.

EFI – Electronic Fuel Injection

EFP – Electronic Fuel Pump

ET – Engine Temperature sensor

FI – Fuel Injectors

FPR – Fuel Pressure regulator

IAC – Idle Air Control actuator

IAT – Intake Air Temperature sensor

ISS – Ion Sensing System…detonation detection

MAP – manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. The MAP sensor monitors the intake manifold pressure (vacuum) and sends the information to the ECM.
The EMC then adjusts the spark and fuel-timing advance curves for optimum performance.

TGS - Twist grip sensor

TPS – Throttle Position Sensor

TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)

VE – Volume Efficiency

VSS – Vehicle Speed Sensor. Used as an input for idle speed control

I believe there are 2 different heat management modes? The 05's have a monitoring system that automatically changes timing etc based on head temp(?) ,,The newer bikes either added to, or replaced, this method with the THROTTLE controlled rear cylinder shut down feature..Check which ONES you have then look at the problem..If it is the 05 style your temp sender could be bad..Look in the manual that's where I found all this..Bill

HD does a "factory" tune that meet EPA.

Change the tune with a SERT or equivalent.
Change to true dual exhaust it makes it cooler for the rear cylinder and passenger.

I've been chasing this darn heat problem too. I'm not a professional wrench turner .... just sharing what I have learned ....

I've installed an oil cooler and a set of Xieds as an interim measure until I connect up a Thundermax PGM along with wide band O2 sensors (need to have about $850 cash in pocket). The Xieds came along with Stage 1 mods I just completed. I use 20W50 Red Line Synthetic and I have factory parade rest rear cyl turned on by the stealership - it came turned off from the factory.

When you hit 231 F or so ... the rear cyl shuts off at idle ... good idea in Florida summers ... keeps from baking your rear and legs and keep the engine from cooking at parade rest or long idles. Turning off parade rest cyl cut off does nothing to keep the engine cool ... in effect it defeats what little good it can do. I suppose it "annoys" some people .. but hard to understand why.

One small but important thing is to keep from obstructing air flows around the jug fins ... that is where most of our heat exchange takes place ... be sure some of the stuff you strap on is not obstructing air flow (bags, tie ons, bolt-ons, etc).

The real fix to this heat issue is to change the A/F ratio and unlean the engine ... the factory PGM runs at stochiometric A/F ratio closed loop 14.6/7 ... the Thundermax I believe drops that to 13.(something). At stochiometric HD meets Federal emissions standards ... yipee .... but the engine runs hut as Hades.

Heat the is the enemy of lubricants, seals, rings etc ... it will shorten the life of the motor ... most of us run air cooled beasts ... and there is only so much you can do ... making the fuel mixture a little richer will make a significant difference ... and you will probably pick up a tad better performance and fuel mileage and those (really) annoying throttle down pops will be reduced ....

PS: Kudos to Daytona Harley Davidson ... the Design Centers guys tell you the straight poop ... they will recommend non-OEM fixes when that is the best for your bike and you ... they quality as a DEALERSHIP and not a sleazy stealership.

Heat management is doing what it is designed to do. If you notice it while riding and not stopped then you have a problem, otherwise, keep on riding.

Bingo ... the XieDs did nothing for my bike .. I talked to "Nightrider" he is aware of the issue and we both believe on the 09/10 bikes the Motor Company added more compensator values into the data mix and the XieD cheater just don't do anything anymore .. after long talk with guys in Daytona ... I've come to conclusion ThunderMax is my long-term permanent fix to lower the A/F ratio and lower running temp. I use Redline Vtwin Synthetic 20W50 and it make a difference but not certain how much ... here in FL .. in the summer ... when I run any length of time .. I will eventually/always turn on the rear cyl parade rest mode .. that means you are at 231 deg effective oil temperature ... way too hot ... we just have to drop the A/F ratio ...
