Question Got A Question?

Just bought the "Fix My Harley" DVD for my 2006 Fatboy. In the oil change section they mention filling the new oil filter to 1/2 full before installing it on the bike. I did an oil change in the Fall of 2008 before I put the bike up for the Winter and didn't fill it to 1/2. I started the bike after the oil change and didn't notice anything wrong. Do you fill your filters to to 1/2 full before putting them on your rides? Does it cause any problems by not filling them to 1/2? Thanks!

Shouldn't be a problem. I know in auto shop (back in the 80s) they taught us that for cars as well. It just gets the oil moving through the system a few seconds sooner after the refill.

It will reduce the time it takes for the oil light to go out. I've done it both ways and filling it half way really reduces the time the light stays on after starting. Won't likely cause any problems even if you don't prefill it, but the half full method is easier on the nerves waiting for the light to go out.

I always prefill the filter. The filter has a paper media that needs time to become fully absorbed for maximum flow. This is one of the reasons the light stays on longer.

Also, it's my understanding that the filter is in line between the oil tank and motor. Therefore, without a prefill, the engine is running short on oil until the filter fills up and begins to flow.

How much time is that.....not much.....however, since the prefill takes so little time, why add the unecessary wear to the engine?

I fill the filter to the top and let it sit while I drain the oil and replace the plug. By the time I install the filter you can't really see much oil. The paper filter has absorbed most of the oil. Very little spillage.....if any.

just my $0.02.........

I fill it halfway before I start the oil change and most is absorbed in the filter media before you install it. Good thing to do
