Loose tranny/dipstick....Any potential damage?
After a routine service at the local dealer, I started hearing a rattling and unusual mechanical noises...mostly while idling, but especially when I put it in gear. Seemed like the high-pitched noise was gear-related or possibly rotational in nature.
And after a short ride, I also noticed oil dripping....not good for a Softail Custom with only 3400 miles. So I parked it and traced the old drip to the transmission filler plug/dipstick. The plug was just sitting in the hole, not threaded into it at all.
So the questions are:
1) Could the unusual sounds have come up from the tranny through the hole...just normal stuff, but louder?
2) Is there anything down near the end of the dipstick it could have been rattling against...maybe dinging something up...something important?
3) Any odds on junk getting in there? Didn't ride it much...not through dirt...but there was a little bit of rain.
Thanks
Ken

OK this photo is small but do you see the little rod behind the cable?
Thats yer' dipschtick. About the only thing a loose schtick could contact would be the clutch cable and or the clutch ramp dealie. Maybe just maybe it could get sideways enough to touch the clutch spring or a funky shaped deal that a shaft rides on but really there isnt anything in there you could have damaged. If the dipstick is still straight and not bent double check your tranny oil level, tighten the fvcker down and go ride. Nothing in that cover to cause any concerns whatsoever.
